'Home Design DNA: Why 75% of Renovations Fail Before They Start'

Discover why so many homemakers finish a renovation and still don’t love the result – and what changes when you finally understand yourself before you pick up a paint chip.

This book speaks directly to the overwhelm almost nobody warns you about before a home project begins:

  • Feeling paralysed by Pinterest boards, Instagram, and endless “inspiration” that never quite adds up to a direction.
  • Fearing the budget blowouts and rework that quietly eat up 29.6% of the average renovation.
  • Struggling to communicate what you actually want to a designer, builder, or tradesperson.
  • Ending up with a beautifully finished space that still doesn’t feel like yours.

Packed with real research, real case studies, and Kristina Cope’s own 35 years as an architect and interior designer, this book promises to:

  • Show you why “what’s your style?” was always the wrong first question.
  • Reveal the seven threads that actually make up your design personality – not a style label.
  • Equip you with the real reasons renovations quietly go over budget, and how to avoid becoming one of them.
  • Give you five interactive “Pause and Reflect” exercises so you’re not just reading – you’re discovering.

This isn’t a style quiz dressed up as a book. It’s the beginning of understanding why you’ve never quite had a “style” you could name – and exactly where to look instead.

“I’d get to the paint counter with my seventeen samples, and I’d just freeze. She hadn’t. – Sally Morgan

"Finally, A Kitchen That Feels Like Me"

April’s kitchen had nothing wrong with it — good workflow, reliable appliances — and she felt nothing standing in it every morning. Three years after redesigning it around her documented design personality, she still walks in and smiles. – April Williams

Six months of paint-store standoffs ended once Robert and John discovered, through their individual design personality work, that what looked like opposite tastes were actually compatible needs neither of them had language for before – Robert Thompson

"DIY And Professional, Guided By The Same Brief"

Robyn used her documented design personality two different ways — handed to a designer for her lounge, and used unaided for her own DIY ensuite and hobby room. Four rooms, two approaches, one clear thread running through all of them. – Robyn Pringle

A Tale Of Two Kitchens E Book

A Career Built on Understanding Home Design

I’ve spent more than three decades as an architect and interior designer, and for a long time, I didn’t know how to solve the exact problem this book is about. I knew it existed – I’d lived it myself, and I watched it happen to my clients, over and over, from the other side of the table.

The First Realisation

The only process I had was to sit with a client for fifty or sixty hours, excavating what they actually wanted before I let myself design a single thing. At my rates then, that was close to ten thousand dollars – and it still didn’t guarantee they’d love what we built together. For a while, I simply gave that time away for free. It wasn’t sustainable.

The Birth of The Austin Home Method®

Slowly, drawing on my architect father’s own gift for drawing out what a client actually wanted, and my mother’s trained eye for colour and pattern, I built what became The Austin Home Method – named for my own family, in gratitude for everything they gave me. It worked. It just still cost too much, in time, for most people to use it.

What COVID Actually Gave Me

In 2020, watching my husband Simon rebuild his university teaching almost overnight for hundreds of students, a much simpler realisation arrived: this was the format. Together, we turned the Austin Home Method into a structured, guided course anyone could work through at a fraction of the cost – Your Unique Home Design Personality®.

Why I’m Telling You This

Everything in this book exists because I couldn’t afford, for most of my career, to give people what I knew they needed. You don’t need fifty hours with me, or with anyone, to close that gap for yourself. That’s the whole point of what comes next.

Why 75.4% of homemakers don’t love their finished renovation — and why it’s a sequencing problem, not a taste problem.

Style is what you see. Design personality is why you see it — and why housing stock across NZ, Australia, the UK, and the USA all teach the same lesson.

Where the 29.6% actually goes, the rework nobody reports, and why “the vacuum never stays empty.”

The three mistakes behind almost every disappointing renovation — and the ripple effect that reaches your relationships, your work, and your wellbeing.

Kristina’s own story — thirty-five years, a family legacy, and the COVID lockdown that finally made the Austin Home Method affordable to share.

The seven threads of your design personality, the real science behind colour, and why this method is a compass — not a map with the destination already marked.

Six real homemakers, six completely different situations, one thing in common.

Meet the author

Hi there! I’m Kristina, the author of this book. I wrote it to give you an honest look at why so many homemakers – worldwide – go through the same disappointing renovation experience, and what actually changes it.

With 35 years of experience as an architect and interior designer, I’ve seen budgets blow out by at least 29.6%, and I’ve seen only 24.6% of homemakers truly love their finished result. But there’s good news: this book shows you exactly why that happens, and gives you the first real step out of it – for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

WILL THIS REPLACE MY DESIGNER OR TAKE AWAY THEIR CREATIVE INPUT?
No – it’s meant to do the opposite. This work gives your designer something to build from instead of a guess – a genuine understanding of who you are, arrived at before the conversation starts. Their flair and expertise still do the work.

DO I HAVE TO GUT MY HOUSE BACK TO BARE WALLS FOR THIS MATTER?

Not at all. Knowing your design personality applies just as much to a rented living room refreshed with soft furnishings and colour as it does to a full renovation.

DWHAT IF MY PARTNER AND I HAVE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TASTES?

This is one of the most common reasons people start this work. Rather than forcing a compromise neither of you wants, it documents each person’s design personality individually and looks for where they genuinely complement each other.

DOES THE FREE QUIZ TELL ME MY DESIGN DNA PERSONALITY TYPE?

No. The free quiz identifies your project approach type – how you naturally like to move through a renovation. Your seasonal colour type is part of the full course, not the free quiz or this book.

I ALREADY KNOW A FAIR AMOUNT ABOUT DESIGN. WILL I GET ANYTHING OUT OF THIS?
Genuinely, yes. Prior training gives you vocabulary and technique – it doesn’t automatically give you self-knowledge. Several experienced renovators featured in this book said the same thing.

DOES THIS ONLY WORK FOR NEW ZEALAND HOMES?

No. The research and the method draw on housing stock and homemakers across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and the USA. The underlying pattern holds regardless of country or architecture.
